There are ongoing scientific researches for upgrading the water purification systems and water filters. The latest news in the field is that nanotechnology can improve the filtration systems greatly. The scientists are truly inspired by something that already exists in nature – cell membranes. There are channels made of proteins within the cells that are transporting water and these channels are called aquaporins. What these channels let through them is only pure water. There are other filtration systems that are within the cell water channels as well. Scientists are trying to come up with a nanotechnology that resembles this technique. Such a system will be able to remove pathogens and different particles from the water better that other membranes for filtration. The big challenge is to make these membranes applicable in the industrial process. This filtration system will be able to purify wastewater and make drinkable or even desalinate. This technique will make a lot of industries greener, because the energy needed for purification is going to be a lot less and will be somewhere between five to ten times better that the old purification systems. Currently the aquaporins are supported by flexible hydrogen layer that very much resembles tissue. This layer is stabilized with Teflon film that holds the aquaporin droplets together.
